I think the meaning of the line could be:
If I feel that 'my body' is 'me', there is nothing but darkness in my heart.
She is consoling herself by reiterating a well-known spiritual belief that what we experience by the feeling of 'me' or 'I' is not just the body, as popularly mistaken, but it actually is the soul. At other times, she might not have given much importance to this belief but now she believes it and she has to because death is definitely going to separate her physical body from her children.
